This unusually high-quality produced book with over 400 pages and a weight of three kilograms is a pan-opticon in the best sense of the word. The author has captured the described characters and their automotive alter egos with an extraordinarily sensitive, unpretentious lens. The result is a wonderfully diverse kaleidoscope of a passion that runs through generations, professions, provenances and sociologies and unites them beyond all differences. 5 stars!

6 Questions with Fabrizio D’Aloisio

There are countless car books out there. What makes Car Guys special?
«Car Guys is a very simple book. Its purpose is not to shine a light on an especially fascinating automotive topic. Rather, it’s an honest depiction of how different people live with their classic cars – that’s it. At first, I was looking for such a book to read, but I didn’t find one. That’s how I came up with the idea to publish it myself.»

The book is also a photographic statement.
«It’s a mix between a richly visual coffee table book and a nonfiction book. At the center is the reportage photography. The interviews with classic car owners and the essays by well-known automotive writers offer valuable insights.»

How did you choose which people to feature in the book?
«I didn’t choose them at all. Whenever the opportunity arose, I did a story about somebody. Many of the people portrayed already belonged to my circle of friends and acquaintances, and others I met by chance. Simone Ventrella for example, who makes the Amalfi Coast unsafe with his Mini, I met via Instagram.»

So you also didn’t plan which cars were featured in Car Guys?
«No, and that’s why there are so many different cars – from a Fiat Panda to an Aston Martin DB4 to a Lamborghini Countach. Readers will have to forgive me that some brands are not represented at all, and yet there are six Porsches in it. But the book is not so much about the cars themselves – it is really about life with a classic.»

What will readers learn from these stories?
«For example, what good design means and what do we mean when we speak of classics, what it’s like to live on a small island like Capri with a sports car, which car you should buy now, why a car is a piece of art or how someone came to own their classic car. Every story is different and interesting in its own way. They are an homage to life and the good old days, but at the same time, they look at the present and to the future.»

Whom is this book for?
«It's for everyone who enjoys photography, people and old cars. Especially people who do not own a classic yet, but want to buy one at some point, receive a lot of valuable information. I tried to include some attractive locales like Monte Carlo and Lake Como, with a focus on my hometown of St. Moritz. I hope the readers enjoy it.»

And we must confess: It’s an instant classic!
